Justin Albert, Assistant Site Coordinator
Justin graduated from Almont High School in Lapeer County, MI, in 2006 and studied Education and Chemistry at Macomb Community College. Justin started taking classes at Eastern Michigan University in 2008 and started working for ISCFC as part of the GEAR UP program at the Willow Run High School site later that year. Since then, he has worked for GEAR UP at Wayne Memorial High School and Bright Futures at Willow Run. Justin has had the opportunity to take our MDOT TRAC bridge building team to state competitions two years in a row, helped his students attend Michigan Youth Leadership Training in Ionia, MI, organized students for an after-school rock band, and worked with our students and The Neutral Zone to ease the transition during the 2013 consolidation of the Ypsilanti and Willow Run school districts.
The Bright Futures program at Ypsilanti New Tech aims to spark commitment and engagement in its students. We also seek to help students transition from middle school to high school and from high school to beyond. We look to empower students so that they can take on leadership roles in program… and eventually in their school and community, with 93% of participants agreeing that they had opportunities to be a leader last year. We strive to create a productive, positive place that fosters youth voice so that students can feel confident speaking their mind and thinking creatively.
"Bright futures for me was an amazing experience, I didn't expect the many benefits, opportunities, and amazing relationships I would create there. Not only with the students, but I created close relationships with the facilitators as well. At Bright Futures I was able to explore interests of mine. And through that I was also able to find others who had the same interests as me. Besides the exploring part, if I felt like I needed extra help , or even extra time to finish a project, Bright Futures was the place to go. Bright Futures became a family for me. I've created many memories there, from the amazing field trips we took, to the many projects we accomplished, and lastly to the amazing people we met along the way. I hope for anyone that chooses to join bright futures, has just as an amazing time, if not better then I had there." - Zakiyyah R. (2015 EMU Bright Futures student)
"They encourage academics, expand relationships, [the students] get to experience things that they haven't been exposed to. Staff are very caring and concerned about my child." - a YNT BF guardians' props! (2015)
After school programming is offered at school, Monday through Thursday from 2:35 p.m. to 5:35 p.m. Every day, students receive a snack, build community with their peers, and are offered a variety of different activities and clubs to choose from… starting with academics, then skill building clubs, and finally a chance to relationship build with staff through community free time. We are in the process of refining our academic time to go beyond regular homework help, so that students have the opportunity to catch up on fundamentals with their school day teachers, which we hope will help them to feel more confident during class.
"Her Academic gains in timeliness on assignments has majorly improved and helped her to be more motivated and successful in class" - a YNT faculty member on a BF student's progress (2015)
We are excited to partner with teachers and school administration to continue to develop what we do each year. We also love feedback from families and students on what works for them… we are happy to discuss individual students needs via the phone and email contacts above.
As a program, we are always working to diversify our range of clubs in order to represent student interest and to introduce teens to something they may not have tried before. Our clubs still feature embedded academics in which students learn concepts featured in school curriculum, but within the context of learning a skill or a craft. Students become invested in their sense of self expression and leave with skills serve for a lifetime. Clubs include: Photography, Art Club, Theater, Anime Club, Nutritious Cooking, Full court basketball, and audio production. We also offer clubs that challenge students to examine how they interact with their world, such as Leadership. We have heard our students feedback that they would like more opportunities for career prep and financial education… stay tuned for offerings in these areas! Friends from the community who are looking for youth outreach options are encouraged to get in touch and see how their efforts might fit with what we do.
If you are a BF family member, you are invited to our Brunches, Showcases, and Game nights. Our families are our community and we understand that committed guardians also have busy schedules… we promise to offer a variety of family events so that we have a chance to connect in person and have fun together in celebration of our great students. Parents and guardians should also stay tuned for field trips and outings. We believe that giving students a chance to learn outside the school environment sets them up to move through world more confidently. We are transitioning to having students do more and more of the field trip organizing so that they can take ownership over our community journeys.
Looking forward to seeing you and your student in the 2015-2016 school year! Please don't hesitate to call or email if you want to find out more.
