Melissa graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2014 with a BA in Elementary Education, specializing in Language Arts and Integrated Science. While attending EMU Melissa began volunteering with Bright Futures and was hired soon after. Upon graduating, she worked as an Assistant Site Coordinator at several Bright Futures locations in both the Wayne-Westland and Ypsilanti school districts. Westland is her home, and being able to bring Bright Futures to a new population of students, families, and educators at Edison Elementary is so exciting! Her favorite part of working in after school programming are the close bonds she forms with students and their families. Being able to reach and teach students in all aspects of their growth and development, not just academics, is so meaningful to her! Melissa has also worked as the director of both Camp Swoosh in Livonia, and Great Futures Summer Program in Westland. When Melissa isn’t working, she enjoys doing nail art – she completed an apprenticeship program in 2016 and received her Michigan Nail Tech License – spending time with her husband and their fur-babies: Atticus, the black pug, and Finn, the tabby cat, spending time outdoors, and watching competitive cooking shows (because she isn’t the greatest cook!)
Bright Futures at Edison serves students in second, third, and fourth grade. We meet after school from 3:50-6:30 Monday through Thursday. In Bright Futures we know how important academic achievement is and we teach our students to prioritize homework, for which we provide support daily. We also encourage our kids to explore their interests by joining clubs. Clubs at Bright Futures are designed around our students – they can include activities such as cooking and nutrition, dance, art, sports, music, fashion design, coding, and much more! A big part of Bright Futures also focuses on Social Emotional Learning in areas like emotion management, empathy, and team work. As Melissa and the Edison Bright Futures team get to know their new students and families, they will be able to tailor the program more specifically to meet their unique needs.
